Most nonreligious people are rejecting a god that they don’t even understand. And if they did, they would probably call a truce and stop fighting against Him so much. Somehow the person of God has become encrusted in many misconceptions and has been misrepresented by His own followers. The atrocities of the Crusades and Inquisitions have overshadowed His goodness. And the willfully disobedient in the Old Testament that God confronted with judgment after centuries of mercy, are used to caricature Him as evil. This can be devastating to those who are struggling with God Questions.
A former chaplain at Harvard, George Buttrick, recalls that students would often come into his office and declare, “I don’t believe in God.” The wise chaplain would then reply, “Sit down and tell me what kind of God you don’t believe in. I probably don’t believe in that God either.” What you think about God and what you think He thinks about you will determine your relationship with Him.
Psalm 103:13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
